You’ve got the baseball bat under your bed and the bb-gun in the closet to protect you. You don’t need anything else. Right? It’s good to know how to protect yourself once an intruder is in the house, but it’s even better to keep the intruders out.
Here are a few ways to protect your student apartment and keep yourself and your roommates safe throughout your college career.
Get window and door alarms. If the monthly payments for an alarm company are out of your measly college part-time-job-paycheck budget, then head to your local Walmart for door and window alarms. These alarms, while not as trusted as alarm companies, can be equally as effective at deterring break-ins and theft since they emit high-pitched howls.
If you live in a pet-friendly apartment complex, never negate the idea of getting a dog. Having a dog in your apartment is about more than having a best friend around 100% of the time. It’s also about letting neighbors and potential intruders know that you mean business. Get a dog that only looks mean and you’ll be guaranteed at least some level of safety and security.
As tech savvy as college students are, they never seem to think of the easiest deterrent to theft there is (and the easiest way there is to catch a criminal): a webcam. You can purchase a recording webcam with alarm system for under $100 online or at a local tech store. Set it up and make sure to post a sign in a prominent location that reads, “Smile, you’re on candid webcam.”
Don’t forget. Safety is also about keeping a low profile. Don’t boast your purchases and don’t be a jerk. Your ability to be humble will make your college experience safer and more enjoyable.

TROY, Ohio -- The fire in an apartment in a senior citizen housing complex in downtown Troy Monday evening is believed to have been caused by a male resident who was smoking while on home oxygen.
That resident was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center near Troy and was later transferred by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
He reportedly suffered facial burns and smoke inhalation.
The fire damage was contained to one room on the second floor of the Morris House at the corner of South Market and West Franklin Streets.
Fire crews said a sprinkler system was able to extinguish the blaze.
Three Troy police officers entered the building--one police officer brought the single victim to safety while the other two officers evacuated the second floor.
