...Fayetteville leaders take another look at false alarm fines
FAYETTEVILLE — Security companies in Fayetteville are sounding the alarm after city leaders approved new fines for false alarms.
Alarm companies say that 75 percent of false alarms are caused by user error. It could be something as simple as forgetting their password, leaving a door open, or it could be a burglar that tried to break in to the house but was scared off by an alarm. Either way, they are reported as false alarms.
But companies argue the new fines are too high and put homeowners at risk. However, city officials said something needs to be done to free up police resources.
"The benefit of that is that we have more police officers on the street doing the things police officers are trained to do," said Dale Iman, Fayetteville's city manager.
Officials said last year in Fayetteville more than 98 percent of the 17,000 alarms were false. The city recently voted to adopt Greenville's false alarm fine structure and charge up to a maximum of $400 for each offense after nine or more false alarms.
