Cross Country provides drivers critical info

SEBRING - It's Thursday morning and about eight employees at a Sebring call center are helping motorists from across the country find their way about.

The drivers could be looking for the nearest Red Lobster restaurant or an address to a friend's place or an alternative route to work. They could be in New York City, Arizona, Oregon or even here in Sebring.

With a simple push of a button, drivers ask for directions in a hands-free cell phone embedded in the car.

Their request ends up at one of two Cross Country Automotive Services call centers, where it is researched and directions are fed back into the car's GPS system.

It's all done in seconds and minutes after traveling a zigzagging route of servers, towers and other communication interfaces.

In other words, it's a kind of a live GPS system that does not require a driver to actually punch in the information.

The GPS assistance, however, is just a small part of automotive telematics, which Sebring Cross Country Director Of Contact Center Operations Barry Bittner described as emerging technology that could well be the norm in a few years.
