Protect the windows, strengthen the doors, deadbolts, etc.
The alarm system does not prevent break ins. It merely limits the amount of time a burglar has before the police arrive. Someone checking out a neighborhood may move on if they know your house has an alarm system, but don’t get a false sense of security with it.
There are several pointers in this file which may help. When picking an alarm company ask around. yes I know that is what you are doing here. I wouldn’t choose a national company just because they are national. sometimes you can get better service from a smaller company. That being said, beware of trunk slammers and fly-by-nighters. Look for a company that has happy customers and is actually available to service your needs should something go wrong.
You can find some information on security systems and features on my website http://www.keepsafesystems.ca The false alarms section has alot of info which may be helpful as does protection101 and the archive.
I would suugest you stay away from wireless security systems unless you absolutely have to. As far as whether your home can be monitored or not, don’t just rely on one persons opinion. I have wired many jobs which other alarm sales people have said were impossible to wire. I don’t really think this is because I am any better, probably more of a statement on how many security alarm companies are going for a quantity over quality approach lately.
I know I really didn’t answer your question. Probably because my answer would be biased so I chose to give more info. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

MIDDLEBORO —- Middleborough Historical Museum welcomes visitors on Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m. and other days by appointment through the end of September. The museum includes seven period buildings, four of which are open to the public. Two 1820-era mill houses are original to the site and formerly owned by Col Peter H. Peirce, as well as the West Side Whistle House, the Judge Wilkes Wood Law Office, and the Sproat Tavern outhouse, all of which were saved from demolition and relocated to the museum's grounds between 1967 and 1981. Since 1981 a blacksmith shop and a carriage house have been added to house the museum's expanding collection.
Museum displays include a diverse collection rich in Middleboro connections including an operating Maxim fire truck, period agricultural tools, household furnishings, photographs, manuscripts, and much more.
On permanent display at the museum is the Tom and Lavinia Thumb exhibit, one of the country's largest collections of memorabilia from this celebrated couple. Discovered by the famous American showman P.T. Barnum, the Thumbs traveled the world for over 20 years, first as part of his American Museum, and later as part of his "Greatest Show on Earth." The 1862 marriage in New York City of General Tom Thumb (Charles Sherwood Stratton of Bridgeport, Connecticut) and Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump of Middleboro was the social event of the season.
