Netgear hopes to eventually unwire your thermostat, transforming your home into a series of unwired but wirelessly connected devices, chief executive Patrick Lo said in an interview on Thursday night.
Netgear launched the its ReadyNAS Ultra on Thursday night, but the company's traditional business has been built on Wi-Fi, the ubiquitous wireless network standard that's the anchor of Netgear's consumer routers. Wi-Fi, meanwhile, has been built into everything from the Boxee Box to the Erector Spykee Robot .
In an interview, Patrick Lo, the chief executive of Netgear, called home automation "the mother of all applications," and hoped to direct his company into that space over time.
For now, however, Lo said that he's trying to push into home security systems, taking on ADT and others with a network of connected IP video cameras that homeowners and possibly law enforcement could access in an emergency.
The problem - and opportunity - are companies like Comcast, Verizon, and other ISPs, which have proved to be both partners and roadblocks. Lo said that selling a VOIP solution against an ISP like Comcast, which can merely bundle service for $20 or so more, was infeasible.
